my first love
“Fall 2001, it was the beginning of my Freshman year of High School in Santa Cruz, Northern California. Little did I know, that playing on the 9th grade basketball team that year would have lead me to meeting my new best friend and riding buddy at the time, Andy Kolasa, who I had noticed rode his mountain bike to practice everyday. Make a long story short..
after discovering a common passion for street mountain bikes, we became best friends spending much of our time together talking about new bike skills we were pursuing and wanted to learn as well planning our next rides.
We always loved sharing the newest cutting edge biking videos with each other too like “New World Disorder”, “New World Disorder II – Fat Tire Fury”, “New World Disorder III – Freewheel Burning”, and “New World Disorder IV – Ride The Lightning”. We really enjoyed watching all our favorite pro mountain bikers doing what seemed like impossible tricks and stunts!
After school, a lot of times Andy and I would finish our homework together then go ride for a couple hours before dark if we didn’t have basketball practice. We looked forward to that time all day and would usually talk about biking during our breaks while switching classes too!
One weekend day while hanging out, Andy mentioned to me he had a Sony digital camcorder that we could use to film and make our first biking video with. At the time, I had never filmed before and definitely didn’t know how to edit or import video footage on a computer. Luckily, Andy had all of that taken care of, and I started learning about it while watching him. We never really sat down and planned out our desired filming and riding locations but it always just seemed to work riding around town and filming at random.
There are clips in this video taken in late 2001 going all the way to early 2003. We mainly filmed around the city of Santa Cruz at locations like Downtown, University California Santa Cruz (UCSC), the local Harbor, Santa Cruz High School (SCHS), Ben Lomond, and we took one trip down to Monterey for a big annual bike event called the Sea Otter Classic, but not having cars or licenses at the time restricted things a bit.
You’ll see me riding two different bikes in this video, one being a Diamondback ‘Response’ and the newer one being a Planet X ‘Zebdi’. Both are hardtail mountain bike frames built up somewhat custom for street and bike trials use.
The equipment we used to make the video, was a Sony digital camcorder, Andy’s HP desktop computer, and all editing was done on Adobe Premier Pro video editing software.
Last thing to mention is just an apology for the poor film quality. I’m not sure how over the years it got so pixelated.
Anyhow, hope you enjoy the very first bike video that Andy and myself managed to put together! I would love to hear any questions or comments down below!”
